Dear friends,
We're enjoying sunshine and wind in Mole after what seemed like a long rainy spell. It was only 10 days or so, but we got 14 inches of rain! The rains caused damage and flooding in parts of Northwest Haiti, but in our immediate area, the worst damage was to the roads. We did have some leaks to repair here, but nothing serious.
Life in Haiti is, as usual, full of unexpected turns and bumps. The garden project is up and growing. Joe Perkins of SFP (that's Sustainable Food Production) and Chris Cooper, who was here working with Joe for a few months, helped us get this project started. One shade-house is in our yard, and is our personal garden; the other is in the lot next door, and is for community education.
In cooperation with SFP, we hope to have several of these in the Mole over the next couple of years. A lot of veggies can be grown, and it will be a huge blessing to this community. Besides the staple "banan" (plantain), we seldom see produce in the local market. We celebrate when we are able to buy a cabbage, or a few little carrots, but can visualize the shade-house gardens completely changing that!
We've had some struggles recently in working with the group of guys who been involved with gardens, learning English, and etc. It started with stolen sand for the basketball project, an unwillingness to make restitution, and has resulted in our having only one of the original seven still with us. Pray for the kids, and for wisdom for us--we certainly need lots of it! We think it's very important not to compromise, and to show that God's principles work. On the bright side, one of Keith's friends has expressed interest in going back to church--he'd quit going some time ago. He's asked for a Bible. Pray for Bastien. The Bibles from World Missionary Press (New Testament and Psalms in Creole) are in high demand. It's encouraging to see them being used in several churches in town. Thanks so much to all who helped us to get our "new" pickup. It's a huge blessing, and worked great on its first trip to Port au Prince a couple of weeks ago, even with six passengers and extra cargo. However, it's now sitting in PAP until the government starts producing license plates again. Rich wasn't able to obtain a temporary permit, and didn't wish to risk having the pickup impounded, so came home with our friends from Bombardopolis, the Leach's. We continue to use the big truck. Rich spent days hauling load after load of sand, gravel, dirt, and rocks for the basketball court. Using the money specified for that project and volunteer labor, we're partway through putting in a half-court size cement pad. It's a lot of hard work; pray that we can finish it before volunteerism fades away altogether. :) Our family is doing well. We miss Mike and Kent a lot and ask you all to pray for them; they are in basic training at Fort Sill, OK. Rich has been sick more since we got back in August than he had in the last ten years! Please pray for his health. Keith, Tyler and Laurie are busy with school, and making great progress. They are a great help to us, as well. Laurie is just recovering from dengue fever; the whole family has had it recently, and we pray our immunity works for awhile now!
We want to thank Pastor Chuck Martindale, Pastor Ken Loubriel and all who contributed to help buy our satellite system. It's great to be able to communicate with you all from our house, and we are grateful for your contribution to God's work here. Rich and Keith took a bit of training when they bought the system, and were able to install it themselves.
Thanks also to Haiti's Hope, and all the individuals who were responsible for the pallet of various goods that was shipped with the pickup. In January, Lord willing, we will begin our orientation period with BHM, preparatory to beginning work with the fifty churches in our zone of Haiti who are associated with Baptist Haiti Mission. Please pray for us during this time of change and learning. God bless and keep you all. In Him, Rich, Marj, Keith, Tyler and Laurie Byers |
